What happens to international treaties?
Since the Constitution requires treaties to be ratified by the Senate, how did it come about that any President who feels like it can abrogate them?
3 個解答Law & Ethics1 年前How can you tell who's given you a thumbs up or down?
Is it possible to tell who has given a thumbs up or thumbs down? I had supposed that process was anonymous, but lately I've seen chatter about who gave a thumbs down, so I wonder if I've been naive.

Postage stamps of the Commonwealth (and I presume lots of other official paper) usually include a marking that looks like EIIR (with the II smaller than the E R) surmounted by a crown. The meaning of this is entirely clear, but what is it correctly called? Is this the Queen's "insignia", her "emblem", "device", "monogram", what?
6 個解答Words & Wordplay1 0 年前How do I change the screen size on a Compaq LTE5300?
The Compaq 5300 comes in two different hardware screen sizes. I have the larger screen, but after a recent system crash, it displays as if it were only a smaller screen. The problem lies in something recorded on the hard disk because when the hard disk is transferred to another machine the problem goes with it.
So what do I tweak on the hard disk to get my machine to use all of its larger screen?

What's the name of the style of proof in which you: 1) make an assumption, 2) demonstrate that it leads to a contradiction, and 3) conclude that your initial assumption was false?
(The example I remember from Uspensky's text was proving that there exists no standard formula for solving 5th degree polynomial equations.)
6 個解答Mathematics1 0 年前identifying saints?
When the Old Masters painted pictures of saints they usually included something that would help identify the particular saint shown. St. Lucy has eyes on a plate. St. Catherine of Alexandria has a wheel.
So what do art historians call these identifying markers in general? Are they "attributes" or something else?

In fancy restaurants there is often a place setting on the table when the diners are seated. Part of this setting is a plate that food is never put on, but is taken away by the waiter early on. What is this plate called? "Charger" has been suggested, but that seems rather vague.
