How do I change the screen size on a Compaq LTE5300?

The Compaq 5300 comes in two different hardware screen sizes. I have the larger screen, but after a recent system crash, it displays as if it were only a smaller screen. The problem lies in something recorded on the hard disk because when the hard disk is transferred to another machine the problem goes with it.

So what do I tweak on the hard disk to get my machine to use all of its larger screen?

Goofing with the Windows settings only changes how much of the Windows page is displayed on my tiny screen. There's always a large black margin all around what Windows shows.

    so going to control panel, then display, then settings and moving the slider up to the top doesn't work?
