Auto Insurance checked when crossing US/Canada border?
My nephew just drove my sisters car over the border into the US. The car was being sold and currently does not have insurance but has valid plates. How was he not stopped at the border for not having insurance? Do they not check to see if car is insured?

Canadian and US Border Services deal with immigration and customs issues. They aren't police or insurance investigators. They do not have the time to check millions of vehicles for insurance nor do they have access to DMV, licensing, registration, etc. information.
Unless they suspect someone of some type of immigration or customs violation... they aren't going to look at the vehicle's registration, insurance, etc. Unless they find drugs in the vehicle, notice that he has an outstanding warrant, or it traveling without a passport... they aren't going to ask who owns the vehicle.
Of course, it he gets pulled over by the police... they'll certainly ask.

I've driven across the US - Canada border hundreds of times. Never once was I asked for proof of insurance. The only thing that anyone ever wanted to see going either direction was my passport.

They have the right to ask for proof of insurance. Usually they do not unless they are suspicious of a particular individual.

Sometimes. Sometimes not. Now the question becomes will he get back into Canada okay?
