When booting up my laptop running XP, the process starts by reading the optical drive and locks up. Ideas?
There is no disk in the optical drive and I have to use a pin in the pinhole to open the drive door. I've taken the battery off and rebooted with just AC power, no dice. I got nothing on the screen, no flash, no text, no nothing. The only idiot light on the display that is hot is the one showing the machine is trying to use the optical drive(CD/DVD). No other indicator lights flash or come on. Any ideas?

Try to connect it to a known good monitor. If you see nothing there then your main board is probably shot. If it works then it is your laptop screen. If you need to get the data off do it yourself with a USB 2.5" HDD enclosure (around $20).
