Why my baby never stops asking for breast milk?

My newborn baby's mouth always signals that he's hungry in a one-hour interval, even though I have spent 2 hours feeding him. He's sucking really loud/hard, so I don't think he's just using my nipples as a pacifier. He cries 15 minuits later if I feed him only for an hour.

If feeds are lasting 2 hours, then he is probably not actively nursing that entire time OR maybe he is not latched on properly and transfering milk well. If he nurses for 2 hours, is he awake all that time or nursing in his sleep? Does it feel like the deep, determined suck of nutritive sucking OR is it the light "flutter sucking" of comfort sucking? Can you hear him swallowing the whole time? Has his latch been checked by a Lactation Consultant or a La Leche League Leader? If not, call someone. A LLL Leader will help you for FREE and may even be willing to visit you at home for a young baby like this.

Make sure he is opening WIDE when you latch him on and then you pull him onto the breast. His lips should be flanged out like "fish lips." His tongue should come out over his lower gum when he suckles. (Someone else can check this for you or you can try to feel with your finger when he is nursing.) Make sure his head is well supported. The football hold and the cross-cradle hold are good positions to control his head and help get him latched on well.

You can try doing breast compressions while you are nursing in order to help him get more hindmilk. (See link below. Kind of like doing hand expression while he is latched on and nursing.) The hindmilk is richer/fattier and can keep him more satisfied.

How old is he? Maybe he is going through a growth spurt?

Breastmilk digests in about 90 minutes. His tummy is about the size of his fist. It's normal for him to need to eat frequently. My concern is that he nurses for such a LONG time and then wants to nurse again so soon.

    ETA:

DO NOT give a newborn cereal. Cereal is not supposed to be started until around 6 mos of age. Starting too early is bad because they can't properly digest it yet. It can lead to allergies, diabetes and obesity.

    ALSO.....

Pumping is NOT a good indicator of your milk supply. Not all moms can pump well. A pump isn't as efficient as a baby who is latched on properly. If baby is latched on properly, the baby will always get more milk than a pump.

It REALLY sounds like there is a latch problem or a milk transfer problem of some sort. Get baby checked for a proper latch and maybe to see if he is tongue tied.

it sounds like your little one is not getting enough. usually after 20 minutes per side it is plenty for them. the sucking really loud and hard doesn't signal that he isn't using you as a pacifier, is he swallowing is what you need to look for. try a pacifier and depend ing on his age cereal may be an answer. you need to see someone about whether or not he is latched on properly and if you have enough milk to sustain him. feeding every 2 hours when breastfeeding is normal though just not as long as you have been.

Some little ones give the impression that they are hungry when they have a gassy stomach too. they pull their legs up and want to suckle thus giving us the impression that they are hungry.

The first thing that i would do is to actually make sure that the medication that she is taking she can't breastfeed with. There are only a small amount of medications that you can not breastfeed with. The first thing to do is to contact a lactation consultant or your local La Leche League ask if they have a copy of Medication and Mothers MIlk and have them look up this medication in that book specifically to see if it is compatible with breastfeeding. Next, the decision on if you would be willing to pump for breastmilk for this child IF mother truly cannont breastfeed with her medication is completely up to you. I think it is amazing that this mother finds so much comfort and trust in you to ask you to provide your breastmilk. But this may be something that you don't want to do because it is time consuming. Maybe you could do it for the first 2 months or something.

You need to go see someone in person. A Lactation Consultant, or a La Leche League Leader (free), or a public health nurse (also free).

To make sure that your baby is latched on properly, which it doesn't sound like if it is taking that long to nurse. Nursing every hour isn't unusual though. Also your infant should be checked to see if he is tongue tied. Of has other problems.

Your baby is either using you as a pacifier (and yes, they will suckloud and hard even then ) or you are low on milk. Go see a lactation cunsultant. They probbably have one at your doctors office, and get a pacifier.

I breastfed my daughter and she started doing the same thing that you're describing. I realized that it was because she wasn't getting enough with just breastmilk. She still wasn't full after breastfeeding. After consulting her pediatrician, I decided to give her a little cereal mixed with breast milk, and I offered it to her with a spoon. I started this only once a day (at lunch time). I made it a really watery consistency to ensure that it wouldn't irritate her stomach. She did wonderfully well with it. I didn't have problems with her taking the spoon either.

Don't worry yourself over if you aren't producing enough milk or not - chances are that you are. BM is produced on a supply and demand schedule. So you are most likely producing bus loads of milk.

You need to either see someone or pump and see how much milk you have and he actually gets. He could be sucking and getting not enough, to feed for 2 hours is way too much.
