Does the US remember...?
that 200 years ago today, off Boston, a Royal Navy frigate, the "Shannon", defeated a larger and more powerful US frigate, the "Chesapeake"? The fight lasted only 15 minutes. I believe this was the most recent time that a British vs US naval battle occurred - am I right?
I have just fired cannons in my back garden to commemorate the victory.

Yes, you are right. In earlier single-ship actions, the American frigates - larger, more heavily-armed, and with enthusiastic crews - had won. Britain was involved in what was almost a world war, and the Royal Navy's best ships and crews were needed elsewhere. "Shannon" was one of these, and was sent across the Atlantic to "reverse the trend" over there. Which she did spectacularly, and in full view of the crowds which had assembled along the coast to witness yet another American victory - the Mayor of Boston had even laid on a Dinner for the captured British officers !
You can still see some of "Chesapeake's" timbers - when she was eventually broken up, they were used to build a barn near Wickham, in Hampshire.
I very much doubt if the US remembers - any more than we do of our History.

The War of 1812 was a distraction to the real war against Napoleon.
1812 was huge for the Americans.
And especially for Canadians since it was their fields, streets, homes, and gardens that the land war was almost entirely fought in and over.
But it was nothing compared to the scope and scale of the carnage of the Napoleonic Wars.
Plus a shocking lot of Americans have a bizarre notion they somehow won the War of 1812, despite failing to achieve all US war aims by force of arms and all US armies having been sent packing every time they crossed the Canadian border.
They're good at not clearly remembering battles they lost, only ones they won.
You just fired cannons in your back garden? Sorry, but I can't help giggling at that.
I had an image of you and your family filling up on beans and toast, then pulling each other's fingers simultaneously...

The US version is that it never really happened and should not be taught to American children during wartime, which is 'all the time'.
Also, US school children are never taught that the British liberated another 3000 US slaves whom they relocated as freedmen to Trinidad. The USA at the end of the war furiously demanded that all
the liberated freedmen be returned to slavery in the USA. The British to their credit paid off the USA 'slavery' costs ,so as to keep the freedmen secure in Trinidad rather than risk future US raids against Trinidad to re-enslave them. U.S. school children are also not taught that the Americans taken off ships and put in the service of the Royal Navy, were from ships violating the British warning to stay out of waters/areas where they would be deemed trading with enemy/French belligerants...
參考資料: I saw FOX News report Russian dissidents fighting against Putin, but the dissidents were members of the Russian Communist Party - but what made the matter even worse was the film was of Greek demonstrators in Athens, but FOX News was wanting to show an anti-Russian show and got the Greek and Russian alphabets mixed up. ..so it just showed Americans the video of the Greek demonstration and said it was Russian. I would laugh, but this really happened recently and FOX News issued no apology or confession of wrongdoing. - ?Lv 68 年前
A bloody affair that could not equal the losses by the Brits on water through out the war. I think I heard your cannon. It made a sound like: "Pffft...."
The Brits had to focus on Nappy during those years. The War of 1812 was more of an aside event to them. Sadly for the Brits it was quite costly. But you have my thanks for The Star Spangled Banner.
