Walkie talkies work great. Buy one with at least a 2 mile range. I use then all the time on my cruises.

Walkie talkies are the way to go because they have a good range on the ship and don't cost anything to use like a cell phone would. The cabins have phones and you can still use them when you know that the other party is in the cabin. But after you are up and about that will not work; you'll be continuously leaving messages that get retrieved who know when.

The only drawback of a walkie talkie is the conversations of other. Since the channels are not private you'll find that when you start talking other using the same channel may cut in. That's the experience we had using them. So you'll need a plan of action so you can switch to other clear channels when there is a problem with too much chatter.

Text messages are much cheaper. 50 cents to send and 5 cents to receive. Check with the cruise line and your cell phone company for availability and actual cost.
