You have to look at the whole passage to get the context of those verses. Basically Peter is drawing a distinction between people who have a spiritual understanding of things because they have been born again and are taught by the Holy Spirit and people who make a pretense of being "religious" as a means to gain money and prestige.

He writes about the benefit of being under the divine protection of God who will deliver the righteous in Christ as opposed to the impending doom of those people who in their ignorance and lack of spiritual understanding treat the spirit world with contempt.

These verses are talking about people who have accepted Christ as Messiah and savior. They are "chosen" by God. Once they had not received mercy, but now they receive mercy. Remember to always read the preceding verses so you can better understand.

    Best wishes.

  • It simply illustrates that we 'Christians' are held to a higher standard. Under the Mosaic law, the priest had 'higher responsiblities than the 'average believer'. We Chistians, now have the Israelites examples; and now we are held to a higher standard'.

In my opinion it is speaking of people with hardened hearts that finally accepted Him. Good question though.
